Design-Build Remodeling in Madison, WI, Planned Before It's Built

Sweeney Design Remodel designs, prices and builds kitchens, baths, basements and additions for Dane County homeowners. Your plumber, electrician and lead carpenter see the plans before the contract does.

Design-build remodeling in Madison, WI, the Sweeney Way

Sweeney Design Remodel has offered design-build remodeling in Madison, WI since 1954. One team handles the design, the budget and the construction of kitchens, baths, basements and additions, so the people who draw your plans also answer for how they get built.

The difference is timing. Before a contract is written, Sweeney brings its plumbers, electricians and HVAC partners through your home, so problems show up on paper instead of behind your walls.

Most of those trade partners have worked with Sweeney for 25 years or more, and when you refer a friend, the same people show up at their house.

Kitchen Remodels

Reworked layouts, opened walls, custom cabinetry, quartz or natural stone tops and layered lighting, plus the panel, plumbing and venting updates behind them. Sweeney kitchens won a NARI Contractor of the Year award in 2006 and a Chrysalis Award in 2005, both in the over-$100,000 class.

Bathroom Remodels

Primary baths that feel cramped often need a smarter layout more than more square feet. Sweeney reworks the flow, builds roomier walk-in showers or soaking-tub retreats, adds vanity storage and sometimes borrows space from a closet next door. Its baths earned NARI Contractor of the Year awards in 2004 and 2013.

Basement Remodels

Unfinished or dated lower levels become rec rooms, wet bars, studies, laundry and storage. Sweeney won NARI Contractor of the Year for a basement over $100,000 in 2017, and one Madison client said friends touring her finished basement could not believe it was the same house.

Home Additions and Whole-Home Remodels

Additions and whole-house projects are where one accountable team matters most, because structure, permits, mechanicals and finishes all have to fit together. Sweeney took NARI Contractor of the Year for additions over $250,000 in 2005, 2006 and 2019, and for an entire house in 2017.

Condo Kitchens and Baths

Condo work means tight galley or peninsula layouts and careful crews in shared buildings. Sweeney has remodeled complete Madison condos, and the president of the Marina Condo Owners Association wrote that the crew protected both his unit and the common areas while keeping residents informed.

They did a spectacular job on my kitchen. I can't say enough about their professionalism.

Sweeney Design did a wonderful job on our home. We were nervous about remodeling because of a previous bad experience with a different builder.
Lindsey S. · Google review
We have used Sweeney multiple times for design/build. They initially appear to be more expensive but their price includes all the unexpected details. If your project is too big for them they will let you know and recommend others. Highly recommend!

Questions Madison homeowners ask Sweeney

Do I need to move out during a kitchen remodel?

Usually not. Most families stay home, but expect noise, dust and short shutoffs of water, power or gas during demolition and rough-in. Some set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave and small appliances, while others book short-term housing. Your design-build team helps you decide based on scope, utility interruptions and your household schedule.

How does the first step work?

It starts with a 30-minute phone call about your needs, what is not working in your space, your budget and your hoped-for timeline. If that conversation lines up, Sweeney schedules a visit to your home to look at existing conditions and scope before any design agreement is signed.

What does the one-year warranty cover?

If materials or construction show defects under normal use in the first year after completion, Sweeney repairs or replaces them at no cost to you. The warranty covers labor, materials and workmanship by its subcontractors, and manufacturer warranties on materials and equipment are transferred to you as the manufacturer allows.

Why bring subcontractors in during design?

Plumbers, electricians and HVAC partners walk your home with the design team before the contract is priced. They flag issues and suggest options while changes still cost nothing but a redraw, which helps prevent surprises, delays and budget overruns later. Most of these partners have worked with Sweeney for more than 25 years.

Is Sweeney the right size for my project?

Sweeney handles kitchens, baths, basements, additions and whole homes, and it has also taken on smaller fixes such as railings, windows and repairs for past clients. One homeowner noted that when a project is too big for the team, Sweeney says so and recommends someone else. A phone consult at (608) 257-3034 settles it quickly.
